Our latest endeavor to help this mission further take shape is our concept design of an intuitive brew guide and companion smart scale called Cupful.
Our Origin story
Born on the coastline of Latvia, raised in the heart of Amsterdam, comes a new specialty coffee brand, Melnūdens.
Meaning black water, Melnūdens captivates coffee drinkers down to its simplest form: coffee on its own. Though don’t confuse simple, with lacking dimension. Melnūdens is on a mission to expose you to the world of specialty coffee, and all it has to offer. Perhaps when you pour a cup of black coffee, you do see black water. However, hold it up to the sun and you will find fractures of light hitting it and reflecting back uniquely in each cup.
Just like Amber found in Latvia, each note of coffee is truly unique. And it becomes this way due to the environmental circumstances that surround it, from seed, to cherry, to roasted bean, to black water in your cup. Melnūdens is here to welcome you to open your senses, explore what is beyond the expected, and fall in love with each sip.

Our FIRST BATCH
The first batch of specialty coffee Melnūdens would like to introduce you to is El Vergel. This bean was specifically chosen as Melnūdens’ first batch, not only because of its fruity, sweet flavor, but also because of its unique story along the way.
Planted and grown in the mountains of Colombia, El Vergel calls one mountain in particular its home. This mountain is referred to as Black mountain due to the fact that it is an inactive volcano, making its soil incredibly rich and suitable for growing coffee with pronounced flavor profiles.
The farmers who care for these beans have spent years learning new techniques and harvesting the cherries, only choosing them when they are truly ready. El Vergel beans grow in the shade of guava trees, allowing the plants to take their time to grow, enhancing the strength and sweetness of the beans.
Once harvested, the cherries move to processing which is done on the same estate where they are grown. Unique in its technique, these beans are processed with what is called anaerobic controlled fermentation, which takes 48 to 60 hours and specifically focuses on regulation of ph levels.
Following this process, the beans are moved through a drying process which includes controlled environments that vary in their moisture level. This time consuming process is crucial for intensifying the natural attributes and flavors of the bean. After processing, the beans dry in the sun, slowly getting ready for the next phase in their development, roasting.
ROASTING OUR fIRST BATCH
The beans are moved to Frekko, a micro-roastery in the Netherlands, who specializes in roasting to truly bring out a full, fruity, and sweet flavor in the beans.
Traditional roasting plays with the flames, adding or reducing heat. However, El Vergel beans are roasted with a style which puts emphasis on adjusting the airflow, removing as much fumes as possible, and reducing the bitter taste.
This demands a very dedicated roaster who must be present during the whole roasting process, manually adjusting and paying close attention to the stages before the first crack. This technique allows the sweet and fruity flavors to be slowly approached in order to encapsulate the taste.
Your everyday coffee will have you used to rich, chocolaty notes leaving you with reminiscent flavors from the roasting process, rather than the bean itself. It is Melnudens goal to introduce you to the exciting journey which is specialty coffee, and in particular, the El Vergel bean.
From seed to cup, this coffee is anything but ordinary. Each bean has been on its own journey and brings something truly unique for you to taste. Just like the name, Melnūdens believes that this coffee should be consumed in its most pure form, just black. Allowing you to explore new flavors, new notes, and a new love for coffee in each sip.
